New 2017 RAM 3500 at Patterson Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM for Kilgore, TX
This is a powerhouse of the trucking industry that you have found here, as the RAM 3500 is designed and built specifically for work and towing. There are a few new additions for 2017- all of them intentionally created for getting things done without problems. New for 2017, a 6.4-liter HEMI engine is standard on Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims. Also, Bilstein monotube shocks become standard on Laramie Longhorn and Limited 4x4 models. All Ram trucks, including the 3500, gain a new-for-2017 five-micron cabin air filter, which is good when you're on a dusty construction site with a lot of carbon dioxide fumes (& who knows what else) outside.
Under the 3500's Hood
Starting things off, the 3500 puts in a 383-hp 5.7-liter V8 that pairs well with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and this combo sees 400 lb-ft of torque. 17,480 pounds can be towed with this setup, with payload capacity reached at 4,042 pounds. The 2017 Ram 3500 has an available 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine that can have one of 3 optional transmissions. The first transmission is a 6-speed automatic (standard) and achieves 370 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque. Second is the 6-speed manual transmission (optional) that increases fuel efficiency with numbers coming in at 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque. The third transmission choice is the optional heavy-duty Aisin 6-speed automatic which gets 385 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque, translating into 31,210 pounds of towing capacity (with a fifth-wheel hitch). A 6.4-liter V8 is available for the 3500 and, overseen by the 6-speed automatic, will bring 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. The towing capacity for this conglomeration is at 16,520 pounds, with a 7,390-pound payload capacity. Payload amounts get to 6,680-lbs using the 6-speed manual, 6,720-lbs with the standard 6-speed automatic, and 6,580-lbs with the HD 6-speed automatic transmission. All these capacities are based upon standard RWD and single rear wheels (not the optional double rear wheel variant). A part-time 4WD configuration with a 2-speed transfer case and low-range gearing is available, yet most 3500 trims are found with standard rear-wheel drive. The base Tradesman is sturdy enough with a manual 4WD transfer case, and all other trims garner the use of an electronic one. The Ram 3500 continues to use the rear Hotchkiss leaf spring system and has an option for a supplemental air suspension system. In the front suspension, a 3-link with track bar, coil springs, stabilizer bar, and solid axle are found.
Design of RAM 3500
There are in 3 cab setups, 6 trims, and 2 bed lengths for the 3500. Crew Cab variants can be purchased with one of two bed lengths. The Regular Cab 3500 comes automatically with an 8.2-foot bed, and the Mega Cab provides a 6.4-foot bed. The 6 trim levels are as follows: the Tradesman, SLT, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, Big Horn (named 'Lone Star' in Texas), and the Limited. The Tradesman and SLT are found in 3 cab possibilities: the 3-passenger Regular Cab, the 5- to 6-passenger Crew Cab, and the spacious 5- to 6-passenger Mega Cab, with all other trims arriving as either Crew Cab or Mega Cab setups. All trims are obtainable with either standard single or available double rear wheels. The Tradesman comes standard with a tilt-only steering wheel and cruise control, all trims above that add a telescoping tilt-wheel steering column. Standard within all trims is a version of the UConnect infotainment system, with either a 5- or 8.4-inch display. In the Laramie or above, a deluxe 8.4-inch touchscreen with GPS navigation is possible to acquire. Available features, depending on trim level, include off-road tires, bolstered audio capabilities, a load-leveling rear air suspension, a cargo-box camera, and the brand-specific RamBox, which has 2 lockable compartments found over the rear fenders and next to the truckbed. A spray-in bedliner becomes available for all trims, as well as a sliding rear window, keyless entry/ignition, and chrome cylindrical side-steps. Also possible to install on select trims is an available power sunroof!
